Brachioplasty (Arm Lift)

Conveniently located to serve Houston

An arm lift removes excess skin sometimes called “bat wings” from the elbow to the axilla. It is a very powerful contouring procedure that significantly improves the patient’s ability to fit into clothing and the overall appearance of the arm contour. Most men and women seek an arm lift after significant weight loss from diet and exercise, a gastric bypass or gastric sleeve procedure.

Arm Lift Candidates

An arm lift is also called Brachioplasty. This procedure involves removing extra skin and fat from the area between the armpit and elbow.

People who have undergone significant weight loss often find their arms have large amounts of sagging skin. Age also leads to sagging upper arms. Exercise helps to tone the upper arm muscles. But exercise cannot correct skin that has lost its elasticity. An arm lift gives such people toned arms and boosts their body image.

Procedure

An arm lift is performed under general anesthesia. The procedure could take between 1 to 2 hours to complete. The arm lift can be simultaneously combined with other body contouring procedures, such as a tummy tuck or breast lift.

First, liposuction of the arm is performed to remove the excess of fat. Second, an ellipse excision of skin at the posterior medial aspect of the upper arm is made. If there is additional excess skin, another incision is made in the axilla. The scar is well hidden in the posterior medial aspect of the arm.

Arm Lift Recovery

Dressings are typically applied over the incision sites. No sutures need to be removed because there are self-absorbing sutures below the skin. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for 2 months. Your arms will be lightly wrapped in bandages to reduce swelling. You may be asked to wear a compression garment to lower swelling. A temporary drainage tube may be inserted in your arm to drain any blood or fluid that collects at the operation site.

After a couple of days, your bandage and drainage tube may be removed. You will have to continue wearing the compression bandage for a few weeks.

You should avoid smoking until you have recovered completely. You should not raise your hands above shoulder level for some weeks after the surgery. You will be asked to avoid strenuous activities involving your arms for a couple of months. You can return to your normal activities within two weeks after surgery. The doctor will give you antibiotics or topical ointments as needed.
